Therapeutic Assessment

When Understanding Is Part of the Healing

Not every question can be answered through therapy alone. And not every assessment should end with a diagnosis and a report.

Therapeutic Assessment is a collaborative approach that uses psychological assessment not only to answer diagnostic questions, but also to deepen self-understanding, foster insight, and create meaningful change. Rather than viewing testing as something that is “done to” a person, Therapeutic Assessment invites clients to become active partners in the process.

The goal is not simply to understand what is happening, but why—and what can be done moving forward.

What Is Therapeutic Assessment?

Traditional psychological assessment often focuses on answering referral questions such as:

  • Do I have ADHD?
  • Am I autistic?
  • Why am I struggling at work or school?
  • What diagnosis best explains my symptoms?

These are important questions.

Therapeutic Assessment asks additional questions:

  • What do these experiences mean in the context of my life?
  • What strengths have helped me get this far?
  • What patterns keep repeating?
  • What has my mind been trying to protect me from?
  • How can this understanding help me move forward?

Assessment becomes a process of discovery rather than simply a process of diagnosis.

What Can Therapeutic Assessment Help With?

Therapeutic Assessment may be helpful if you:

  • Feel “stuck” despite previous therapy
  • Have received different or conflicting diagnoses
  • Want a deeper understanding of yourself rather than just a diagnostic label
  • Are questioning whether ADHD, autism, trauma, personality patterns, or another condition best explains your experiences
  • Feel that previous evaluations answered what but not why
  • Want practical recommendations that extend beyond a written report

Our Approach

Therapeutic Assessment combines standardized psychological testing with collaborative conversations throughout the evaluation process.

Rather than waiting until the very end to discuss results, we work together to explore emerging themes, questions, and insights as the assessment unfolds.

The process is guided by your own questions and goals.

Depending on your needs, the assessment may include:

  • Clinical interviews
  • Standardized psychological tests
  • Cognitive and neuropsychological measures
  • Personality assessment
  • Behavioral questionnaires
  • Collaborative feedback sessions
  • Written recommendations tailored to your life, relationships, education, or work

What Makes It Different?

Unlike traditional evaluations that focus primarily on diagnosis, Therapeutic Assessment is designed to leave you with a deeper understanding of yourself.

Many clients describe feeling that, for the first time, someone helped them make sense of experiences that had seemed confusing for years.

The assessment itself becomes part of the therapeutic process.

You will leave not only with answers, but with a clearer framework for understanding your strengths, challenges, relationships, and next steps.

What to Expect

1. Initial Consultation

We begin by discussing the questions that brought you here and what you hope to gain from the assessment.

Sometimes those questions are straightforward.

Sometimes they evolve as we learn more together.

2. Collaborative Assessment

Testing is completed using carefully selected psychological measures based on your individual needs.

Throughout the process, we invite curiosity, questions, and reflection.

Assessment is something we do with you—not to you.

3. Feedback and Integration

Results are shared in a collaborative feedback session.

Rather than simply reviewing scores or diagnoses, we explore how the findings fit within your broader life story and discuss practical recommendations together.

You will receive an integrated written report summarizing the findings and recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Therapeutic Assessment the same as psychological testing?

Not quite.

Therapeutic Assessment uses many of the same standardized tests as traditional psychological evaluations, but the philosophy and goals are different.

Traditional assessment often emphasizes diagnosis and documentation.

Therapeutic Assessment emphasizes understanding, collaboration, and meaningful change in addition to diagnostic clarification.

Will I still receive a diagnosis if appropriate?

Yes.

If your assessment supports a diagnosis, it will be discussed openly with you and documented when appropriate.

However, the diagnosis is viewed as one part of a much larger picture—not the final answer.

Can Therapeutic Assessment replace therapy?

Sometimes.

For some individuals, the insights gained through Therapeutic Assessment are enough to guide meaningful change.

For others, the assessment serves as an excellent foundation for ongoing therapy by helping both client and therapist begin treatment with a much richer understanding of the presenting concerns.

How long does the process take?

The timeline varies depending on the referral questions and the scope of the assessment.

Most Therapeutic Assessments include:

  • Initial consultation
  • One or more testing sessions
  • Collaborative feedback session
  • Comprehensive written report

We will discuss the anticipated timeline during the initial consultation.

Is Therapeutic Assessment right for me?

If you’re looking only for documentation to satisfy a school, employer, or insurance requirement, a traditional assessment may be sufficient.

If you’re hoping to better understand yourself, make sense of longstanding patterns, and use the assessment process itself as an opportunity for growth, Therapeutic Assessment may be a particularly good fit.
